Why isn’t all university press journal content free to read?

Publishing high-quality scholarship involves costs related to peer review management, editing, design, digital platforms, and long-term preservation. Subscription revenue, licensing agreements, and Author Processing Charges (APCs) help offset these expenses and ensure the sustainability of journals programs. While university presses support broad access to research, they must balance accessibility with the financial realities of scholarly publishing. Open-access models often depend on external funding or institutional support to remain viable.
