Can my new work include coauthored, previously published material?

Can my dissertation or book include coauthored material that has been previously published?

Specific policies will vary by institution. With regard to including coauthored, previously published material in your dissertation or thesis, you should ask your advisor or graduate department. Similarly, different presses may have different opinions about using previously published material in general and about reusing coauthored material in particular; inquire with your acquisitions editor. As a general rule, it’s a good idea to get permission from your coauthor to reuse any material you jointly produced, and it’s possible your press will want documentation of their permission. As with any previously published material, you should also ensure you retain the publication rights to it and properly cite the original publication.
